K.Porten和D.V.Volman在1962年介紹了將CO，CO2，H2等催化還原生成甲烷后用氫火焰離子化檢測器進(jìn)行檢測。Johns和Thomson進(jìn)一步證實了這一方法, 并測定了每種氣體的操作參數(shù),目前氣體中微量碳的分析方法有多種途徑，但其中為簡單快捷的是氣相色譜中甲烷轉(zhuǎn)化爐法。樣品通過色譜柱實現(xiàn)組分的分離，在甲烷轉(zhuǎn)化爐中由Ni(鎳)觸媒將分離的一氧化碳和二氧化碳加氫轉(zhuǎn)化為甲烷，而后再通過氫焰檢測器檢出。
